Additional Details

The Dutch East India Company's arrival in Bantam in 1596 begat an unprecedented era of pepper trade out of the Kingdom of Western Java and Sumatra. The events represented in this engraving depict what would have been some of the earliest endeavors to establish trade and supply of such exotic spices to the ravenous inclinations of their European consumers.
